How to Determine the Right Width for Toilet Placement in Your Bathroom

When installing a toilet, it's important to leave certain clearances in front and on the sides for convenient usage.

How wide should the toilet area be?

For toilet installation, it is generally advisable to leave a space of about 45 to 50 cm in front. This ensures that users have enough room for their legs and can move about comfortably. Additionally, there should be a clearance of about 70 to 90 cm on either side of the toilet. This space can be used for items like a waste basket or for ease of movement. If the space is too small, it can feel cramped, while too much space may make it inconvenient to reach for items like toilet paper.

The positioning of the toilet relates to the toilet's rough-in measurement, which typically comes in three standard sizes: 30, 35, or 40 cm. It is essential to measure the rough-in distance before purchasing a toilet, and this measurement should ideally be taken after the tiles have been installed for greater accuracy.

How to measure the toilet rough-in?

1、Once the tiles are laid, you can measure the rough-in, which is the distance from the center of the drainage pipe to the finished wall where the tiles have been installed. If the tiles haven't been laid yet, you should subtract the tile thickness from the measurement, for example, subtract 20 cm.

2、Based on the measured dimensions, you can go to the market to purchase the corresponding toilet. However, do not install it immediately upon purchase, as there may be measurement errors. To facilitate the installation of the toilet, you can use an offset flange to adjust the position, ensuring proper alignment. However, be cautious, as this may lead to clogging issues, so it’s paramount to measure accurately to ensure the toilet can be properly installed without blockage issues.

How to install the toilet?

1、The most important part of installing the toilet is to align the waste outlet properly. Check the pipes to ensure they are clean, and then level the area to prevent water leakage issues.

2、Make sure to create a good seal at the bottom; use a wax ring for sealing and apply a bead of silicone around the pipe area. Then, align the toilet vertically with the center of the waste outlet and install it, ensuring a proper seal where it meets the floor by applying silicone for enhanced sealing.

In summary:When installing a toilet, it's vital to determine the installation location carefully and measure the rough-in distance beforehand to purchase the right sized toilet accordingly.
