How to Effectively Change Your Toilet's Fill Valve

25/02/2025 | Hawkrown

Many people choose to replace the toilet fill valve themselves when it breaks, as this process is usually quite simple. We can complete the replacement in five steps. Below are the detailed steps.

How to Replace a Toilet Fill Valve:

1、Shut Off the Toilet Water Valve

Typically, the toilet water valve is located on the wall behind the toilet. Once you find the valve, turn it counterclockwise to shut it off. If the toilet does not have a separate water valve, you will need to locate the main water shut-off valve in your home, which is often installed near the water meter.

2、Empty the Water Tank

First, press the toilet flush button to drain the water from the tank. Next, use both hands to lift the tank lid and place it gently on the floor. Check to ensure that there is no water left in the tank. If there is still water, press the flush button again. Emptying the water tank will prevent leaks during the removal of the fill valve and supply line.

3、Disconnect the Supply Line

Using your hands, loosen the fittings securing the supply line at both the bottom of the toilet and the water valve. Once loosened, remove the supply line and set it aside. If you cannot loosen it by hand, use a wrench or similar tool to twist and detach it.

4、Remove the Fill Valve

The fill valve is typically secured with a plastic cap located at the bottom back of the toilet. Once you locate it, rotate the cap to remove it. Be sure to keep the removed cap safe, as misplacing it could result in damage. Afterward, take out the toilet fill valve from the tank.

5、Install the New Fill Valve

Position the new fill valve you purchased onto the fill opening of the toilet tank, and then tighten the cap to secure it in place. When purchasing a fill valve, a universal model will usually suffice. Once the fill valve is installed, reconnect the supply line, put the tank lid back on, turn on the toilet water valve, and the toilet should be ready for normal use.

In summary:this is a simple guide on how to replace a toilet fill valve. If your toilet fill valve is malfunctioning, you can refer to the steps above for a DIY replacement. For more related information, feel free to follow Hawkrown.
