When and How to Replace Your Installed Floor Drain

24/02/2025 | Hawkrown

The bathroom originally had a floor drain installed, and now you want to replace it. What is the specific method for replacement?

How to Replace a Drain in the Bathroom

1. To replace the old drain, first measure the dimensions and specifications of the existing drain, and choose a new drain that is similar in size. Prepare a screwdriver and remove all the cement around the old drain. Gently tap the gaps where it connects to the tiles to help detach it from the cement. Once the old drain is taken out, clean up the surrounding cement, close up the hole, and reapply cement mortar. The cement mortar should be aligned with the tiles and should not exceed their height, as this would interfere with drainage. After the new drain is installed, also install the anti-odor core to ensure proper drainage function.

2. During the replacement process, make sure to block the drainage pipe to prevent any falling cement from causing a blockage. Additionally, the installation location should be lower than the floor level to ensure that water flows downward. If the drainage pipe is above the floor, you may need to cut the pipe shorter.

Choosing a Drain for the Bathroom

1. There are various types of drains available. For example, shallow water seal drains have a relatively short lifespan and may lose their odor and insect prevention effectiveness after some time. Another type is the pop-up drain, which can be manually closed but is difficult to clean, relying on a spring mechanism that can vary in quality.

2. On the other hand, deep water seal drains operate on the same principle as shallow ones but are elevated, providing better insect and odor prevention.

3. A T-type drain is also a good choice for the bathroom as it offers excellent odor and insect prevention, along with fast drainage, though it can be challenging to clean. There are also gravity flap drains, which are cost-effective.

In summary:the effectiveness of odor and insect prevention varies with different types of drains, so it’s essential to choose good materials such as stainless steel or brass, and ensure proper installation to guarantee effective drainage.
