The faucet is an essential item found in every household, providing convenient access to water when needed. However, over time or due to improper use, leaks may occur. If not addressed promptly, it can lead to significant water damage. There’s no need to panic; as long as you grasp the relevant knowledge, it can be easily resolved. Let's take a look at how to handle this issue.
What to Do If the Faucet is Leaking
1. Prepare tools for repair: find a screwdriver and a wrench that are commonly available in most households, and shut off the water supply valve. When closing it, do not apply too much force, as this may cause damage.
2. Most household faucets are designed to either press or turn. Start by unscrewing the small screw on the faucet and remove the handle.
3. Tap water contains a large amount of minerals that can accumulate in the pipes and faucet over time. This buildup can accelerate aging of the faucet’s spindle and gasket. Now, using your tools, remove the faucet and carefully clean the spindle and gasket.
4. Check if the gasket has oxidized; it may need to be replaced with a new one. Ensure the gasket is properly seated. If the spindle is damaged, replace it with a new one. If you don’t have a spare at home, you can purchase one at a hardware store.
5. Check to see if the spindle and faucet can fit together properly without any misalignment. If it’s not a gasket issue, the packing nut may be loose, and you can tighten it.
6. After addressing the above points, reattach the faucet, turn on the water supply, and see if the issue is fixed.
Faucet Maintenance
1. Regularly wipe the surface to prevent rusting; a shiny surface is also more pleasant to look at.
2. Avoid allowing too much limescale to accumulate internally, as this can lead to rapid oxidation of the faucet. Since disassembling the faucet can be cumbersome, doing a thorough cleaning every six months should suffice.
3. When using the faucet, handle it gently—avoid rough twisting or pressing.
4. Be cautious about your cleaning products; avoid acidic cleaners or abrasive materials like steel wool.
Cautionary Notes
1. When disassembling, be careful not to scratch the surface of the faucet.
2. If it cannot be disassembled easily, do not force it. Consider hiring a professional for repairs, as this is a technical task.
It may seem simple, but the actual operation can vary from person to person. Now, let’s roll up our sleeves and give it a try!
