How to Properly Join a Short Drain Pipe Under Your Floor Drain

19/02/2025 | Hawkrown

When installing a floor drain, it's essential to ensure that the drainage pipe is properly set up. It should neither be too short nor too long since both situations can affect drainage efficiency. So, what should you do if the drainage pipe is too short?

How to connect a floor drain when the drainage pipe is too short

If the drainage pipe for the floor drain is too short, it will affect the installation of the floor drain, leaving a gap that prevents proper drainage. First, prepare some materials: a 50 mm diameter pipe connector, a small brush, PVC glue, and a saw.

Open the glue and use the small brush to coat both the short drainage pipe and the connector. After applying the glue, slide the connector onto the drainage pipe and apply slight pressure to secure it. Then, coat the other end of the PVC pipe and the connector, inserting the PVC pipe into the connector with a little force as well. Once the PVC glue sets, it will create a strong and effective seal, enabling proper drainage.

How to seal the drainage pipe and the floor drain

1. To meet the drainage requirements of the floor drain, choose the drainage pipe based on the diameter of the pipe. Generally, the diameter of the drainage pipe is about 50 mm, although it might be slightly larger for cast iron pipes. We can determine the outlet size according to the dimensions of the floor drain to avoid later adjustments and the need to buy a new drain.

2. When installing the floor drain in a bathroom or kitchen, ensure that there is a certain slope, and provide a slope around the floor drain as well. This allows water to flow down smoothly. The installation should be synchronized with the tile laying process. Apply cement to the back of the floor drain panel, align it with the drainage outlet, and cover it to ensure a firm fixation.

3. After securing it, seal the edges with glass glue, and some may prefer using cement for sealing. Finally, check whether the drainage is clear and if there are any leakage issues.

In summary:this guide explains how to connect a drainage pipe when it is too short. By adding a small section of pipe, you can extend the drainage system and achieve a seal that allows for effective drainage.
