After installing a new toilet, if there is a persistent unpleasant smell, it could indicate a problem with backflow. Here’s an overview of the possible causes and solutions.
Possible Causes of Smell from New Toilet
1、Quality Issues with the Toilet
If a new toilet emits an odor, it might be due to poor quality. Typically, there are two to four holes in the base of the toilet. If these holes were not properly treated during manufacturing, they could become a source of odor when the toilet is installed. Additionally, if the wax ring or flange connection isn’t sealed correctly, odors can escape from these holes.
If you cannot identify the source of the smell, check these holes. To resolve this issue, you may need to seal all vent holes with caulking and also seal the screw holes used to secure the base. Ensure the sealing ring at the bottom of the toilet is properly installed to prevent odor backflow.
2、Clogging Issues
Another reason might be that the toilet is clogged. Even a new toilet can get blocked if used improperly, such as if non-flushable items or hard objects get stuck inside, preventing waste from draining and causing odors.
Installation Steps for New Toilet
1、Positioning the Toilet
Before installation, determine the toilet’s position and seal the vent holes at the base. There are typically two holes, about the size of a coin, used for securing the toilet, but they are not often used. Before installation, apply caulking to fill these holes to prevent future smells.
2、Sealing and Installing
After applying caulking, cover the holes and cut the waste pipe to fit the flange. Ensure a secure seal. Place the flange directly onto the bottom of the toilet and connect it to the drain pipe. Adjust the position and test for any leaks. After confirming there are no issues with water flow, apply caulking where the toilet base meets the floor, preferably using a mold-resistant type. Allow the caulking to cure before using the toilet.
Summary:To prevent odors from a new toilet, ensure the bottom is properly sealed and avoid clogging issues. Addressing these factors usually resolves any odor problems.
