How to Turn a Stubbornly Smooth Faucet Spout

14/02/2025 | Hawkrown

Faucets are essential tools in kitchens and bathrooms, and there are many styles available on the market, such as round and flat faucets. If a faucet is used for a long time, it can easily rust and may become difficult to turn. So, what should you do if the faucet spout is too smooth to turn?

1. What to do if the faucet spout is too smooth to turn

When turning the faucet, if the spout is too smooth, you can wrap it with a plastic bag or cling film to increase its grip. Then, use a pair of pliers to grip the spout and use a wrench to rotate the faucet aerator, which should help you take it off.

2. What to do if the faucet aerator is stuck

If you find that the aerator is stuck and won't turn, first check if it has rusted. If it has, spray some rust remover on it and wait for some time for the rust remover to react with the rust. After that, gently tap it with a hammer and try again.

You can also drip some machine oil on the surface and then tap it lightly with a wrench; this might help to loosen it.

In some cases, older faucets may have an outlet screw that is tightened too much. You can use an adjustable wrench to hold the faucet while using one hand to grip the internal screw, then try tightening it a bit before loosening; this might allow you to unscrew it.

3. Types of faucets

1) According to the structure, some faucets have one handle, and others have two handles. A two-handle faucet connects to both hot and cold water pipes, while a single-handle faucet may connect to just one of them.

2) Based on how they operate, some faucets rotate, while others are lift-type. The most advanced ones are sensor faucets that automatically turn on when you place your hand beneath them.

3) Regarding the internal valve core, some are ceramic, while others are made of stainless steel.

In summary, if you need to turn a faucet at home but find it too smooth, wrapping it with a plastic bag or cling film can help. If it’s hard to turn, it may be due to rust or being overly tightened.
