The faucet is an essential tool in kitchens and bathrooms, and there are various styles available on the market, such as round and flat faucets. After prolonged use, faucets can rust and may become difficult to turn. So, what should you do if the faucet spout is too smooth to turn?

1. What to do if the faucet spout is too smooth to turn

When trying to turn the faucet, if the spout is too smooth, you can wrap it with a plastic bag or cling film to increase friction. Then, prepare a pair of pliers to grip the spout, and use a wrench to turn the faucet’s aerator to remove it.

2. What to do if the faucet aerator cannot be turned

If you encounter a situation where the aerator cannot be turned, first check if there is any rust. If rust is present, you can spray some rust remover on it and wait for a while for the rust remover to react with the rust on the faucet. After that, gently tap it with a hammer and try again.

You can also drop some machine oil on its surface, then tap it a few times with a wrench, which may help loosen the aerator.

In some older faucets, the screw connecting the faucet to the water pipe might be too tight. You can use an adjustable wrench to hold the faucet while using one hand to grasp the internal screw and then try to turn it with a tool; this might help in loosening it.

3. Types of faucets

1. Based on structure, some faucets have a single handle while others have two handles. Two-handle faucets typically connect both hot and cold water pipes. Single-handle faucets may connect to either a cold or hot water pipe.

2. Based on how they are operated, there are rotating faucets and lever-style faucets. A more advanced option is the sensor faucet, which automatically dispenses water when you place your hand underneath it.

3. Based on the internal cartridge, there are ceramic cartridges and stainless steel cartridges.

In summary, if you need to turn the faucet but it is too smooth, you can wrap it with a plastic bag or cling film. If it cannot be turned, it could be due to being overly tight or rusted.
