How to Fix an Overflowing Floor Drain: Causes and Remedies

13/02/2025 | Hawkrown

A floor drain is one of the important components of a drainage system, serving the purpose of drainage and waterproofing. However, sometimes a floor drain can experience backflow issues. Next, we will introduce the reasons for water overflowing from the floor drain.

Reasons for Water Overflowing from the Floor Drain

1. The floor drain is clogged, causing water to overflow.

2. The diameter of the drainage pipe is too small, failing to accommodate the drainage volume, leading to water overflow from the floor drain.

3. The drainage pipeline and the floor drain pipeline share the same system, causing the pipeline to be unable to handle the water flow, resulting in water overflow from the floor drain.

How to Replace a Floor Drain

1. First, remove the old floor drain. You can use a cutting machine to cut it out, but be careful to cut along the edge of the floor drain to avoid damaging the floor.

2. After cutting, use tools to gently tap the floor drain to loosen it from the tiles, making it easier to remove. Once the floor drain is taken out, place a cloth into the drain to prevent debris such as cement or sand from falling in and causing a blockage.

3. After cleaning the surrounding sand and dirt of the floor drain, you can remove the cloth and insert the new floor drain. Check to see if the height is appropriate; if uneven, leveling treatment is necessary.

4. Once the floor drain is level, apply waterproof coating around the drain, making sure the groove is about 1mm lower than the surrounding tiles.

5. After waiting for about ten minutes, place the water-soaked filter shaft into the base of the floor drain and rotate it appropriately to ensure that the silicone around the filter shaft properly bonds with the base.

6. Finally, place the filter screen on top and clean the area around the floor drain.
