Tips for Removing a Rusted Faucet Valve Screw

06/02/2025 | Hawkrown

In daily life, we may encounter issues like the one I faced recently when trying to turn off the faucet at home. No matter how much I tried to turn it, it just wouldn’t budge. Later, I discovered that the valve core screw had rusted. In such cases, how can we make it easier to turn?

1. What to do if the faucet valve core screw is rusted

If the faucet valve core screw is rusted, the first step is to remove the rust. Purchase a rust remover and spray it on the rusty area, applying a few extra drops at the joint. Wait for the rust remover to penetrate and effectively dissolve the rust, then try turning it again to see if it moves. If it is completely rusted and you can’t shut off the main valve, you may need to cut the pipe and elbow, and then use a tap to re-install the faucet.

Besides using rust remover, you can also apply machine oil or pour white vinegar on the joint area. After allowing it to dissolve effectively, try turning the faucet again to see if it works. If all else fails, consider replacing the faucet; wrap some sealing tape around the screw and ensure you wrap it in the correct direction, then use a wrench to tighten it.

2. What material is best for faucet valve cores

The quality of a faucet primarily depends on its valve core, which plays a crucial role. If you choose a copper valve core, it may be more expensive but offers excellent quality. Pure copper is less likely to rust.

You can opt for stainless steel valve cores, as they do not pollute the water quality and have a long lifespan. If you select 304-grade stainless steel, it is also resistant to rust over time and is a favorite among consumers.

Ceramic valve cores are another good choice, boasting excellent wear resistance and sealing performance, with a long service life and high-temperature resistance. They are also reasonably priced.

The above content provides a detailed analysis of what to do if you encounter rust problems with your faucet. The first step is to remove the rust, and then using tools, you can make it easier to unscrew. If you want to prevent rust in your faucet, consider choosing pure copper or ceramic valve cores.
